Climate Change and Regional Ocean Water Mass Disappearance: Case of the Black Sea

We investigated Argo float data from the Black Sea and showed that cold water formation events are becoming weaker with warmer winters. The cold intermediate layer, a prominent feature of the Black Sea, is disappearing.

The figure shows a Hovmöller diagram of temperature in density coordinates with three distinct cold water formation events, which could not sufficiently refill the cold intermediate layer.
